EOS 101: Knowing the Basics

  • Vision: getting everyone in their organization on the same page with regard to what the business is, where it’s going, and how it’s going to get there (something to look forward to)

Traction: creating a culture of discipline and accountability so everyone knows who does what and can count on one another to fulfill their role (something to do)

Healthy: creating an environment where everyone genuinely enjoys working together (someone to love)

Please see this blog article to learn more: Well-being = Vision, Traction, & Healthy

  • EOS utilizes 6 main components:

Vision: Strengthening this component means getting everyone in the organization 100% on the same page with where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.

People: Simply put, we can’t do it without great people. This means surrounding yourself with great people, top to bottom, because you can’t achieve a great vision without a great team.

Data: This means cutting through all the feelings, personalities, opinions, and egos and boiling your organization down to a handful of objective numbers that give you an absolute pulse on where things are.

Issues: Strengthening this component means becoming great at solving problems throughout the organization – setting them up, knocking them down, and making them go away forever.

Process: This is the secret ingredient in your organization. This means “systemizing” your business by identifying and documenting the core processes that define the way to run your business. You'll need to get everyone on the same page with what the essential procedural steps are, and then get everyone to follow them to create consistency and scalability in your organization.

Traction: This means bringing discipline and accountability into the organization – becoming great at execution – taking the vision down to the ground and making it real.

Understand the Foundational Tools

  • It is a unique, two-page template for organizing plans and forecasts the future of a company. Once completed, it acts as a time-management tool, helping you decide when to action each element of your strategy.

For more information please see this video - What is V/TO Mike Roth

  • It’s a supercharged organizational chart that helps define and visualize the structure of an organization by focusing on functions and seats with roles and responsibilities instead of on titles and positions.

  • Rocks: Company Rocks are priorities for the company, departmental Rocks are priorities for your department, and individual Rocks are priorities for you or another individual. As simple as that sounds, it’s easy to overcomplicate Rocks.

To-Do: A To-Do is anything anyone commits to on the leadership team that must get done in the next seven days (worst case 14 days). Always track your to-dos on your Level 10 meeting agenda and confirm they are completed in the following week’s meeting.

  • Anyone reading this has probably sat through countless meetings that could’ve been an email. People go on tangents, the organizer lacks any real agenda, and people walk away wondering why the heck they went. It can feel like death by 1,000 hours of pointless meetings. Enter the Level 10 Meeting.

  • Scorecard items, as defined by EOS, are forward looking, activity based numbers, with weekly goals, which lead to desired outcomes. A classic example of this is achieved by documenting the activities in the sales pipeline which move a suspect through the pipeline to prospect, hot prospect and finally to customer. Items like qualification calls, requirement assessment meetings, capabilities presentations, and quotations are examples of scorecard activities.
